What Are Mounjaro and Wegovy?
Both are injectable, prescription-only medicines licensed by the MHRA for weight management in adults who meet specific clinical criteria, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity — neither is licensed as a stand-alone treatment.
- Wegovy contains semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist.
- Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, a dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist.
Both are self-administered once-weekly injections, typically starting at a low dose that is gradually increased ("titrated") under clinical supervision.
How They Work: GLP-1 vs Dual-Action
The underlying biology is the main structural difference between the two medicines.
Wegovy (semaglutide) mimics GLP-1, a hormone released naturally after eating. This slows gastric emptying, increases feelings of fullness, and reduces appetite signals in the brain.
Mounjaro (tirzepatide) acts on two hormone pathways — GLP-1 and GIP. The addition of GIP is thought to further support appetite regulation and blood glucose control, which is why tirzepatide is often described as a "dual-action" mechanism.
In practice, this means the two medicines can feel different in terms of appetite suppression and side-effect pattern from one patient to the next — which is exactly why a clinician reviews your individual history before recommending either.
What the Clinical Trial Data Shows
Semaglutide was studied in the STEP trial programme, and tirzepatide in the SURMOUNT trial programme. Published data from these trials shows average weight loss outcomes were higher, on average, in the tirzepatide trial population than in the semaglutide trial population, particularly at the highest licensed doses.
It's important to read that carefully: these are average, trial-population results measured over many months, not a guarantee of what any one person will experience. Response to either medicine varies significantly between individuals, and a medicine that performs better on average across a trial cohort isn't automatically the right — or best-tolerated — choice for you specifically. Dosing and Titration
Both medicines follow a titration schedule — starting on a low dose and increasing gradually, under clinical review, to reduce the likelihood of side effects while your body adjusts. Side Effects
Both medicines share a broadly similar side-effect profile, most commonly:
